Windows Store didn't work after upgrading to Windows 8.1 from store online I had windows 8 Pro 64 bit previously. After launching of Windows 8.1 at Store online, I updated with it. After all installation complete, all my apps (windows package), such as STORE, Skype, Photo, Skydrive and etc., they doesn't work anymore. They have SMALL X at the icon. If I click it, some just did nothing (I use green theme, so just full green display until I click it back to Metro UI with nothing seem working. It also affect to my Metro setting (right bar/setting/change PC setting, it just only show my metro UI). Almost a week I try to follow all suggestion from this forum, but they don't work with me. I see some users work with that, but I see some is not (same with me). Yesterday I found an update through Windows Update, but it covers for IE 11. I think this is the worst bug that Microsoft had since Windows 95 (my first Windows). I can see it already happened since last year (2012). But since it only Windows 8.1 preview, I thought that in the final version it would be solved because Microsoft team had a lot of time to did that. I was wrong. It's still not solved. A lot of users still have same problem. I hope Microsoft will issue an update for this issue as soon as possible, since a lot of users is have problem with it. Below some steps I collected from my exploration in the last week (underline sentences are my actions and comment): Method 1: I would suggest you to run Windows 8 App troubleshooter to diagnose and fix the issue. You can download the app troubleshooter form this link “Windows 8 App Troubleshooter”. It said: Display adapter drivers might be out-of-date I open device manager and click: Display Driver/Update Driver Software/Search Automatically for updated driver software. I have Intel HD Graphics 3000 and its driver is ver 9.17.10.3223 (date 27/06/2013). I believe it's the latest one. Method 2: Screen resolution set to 1366 x 768. UAC is active / on. I did that but nothing's worked. Method 3: The werfault.exe is used for Windows Error Reporting. It is a feature that allows Microsoft to track and address errors relating to the operating system, Windows features, and applications. It gives you the option to send data about errors to Microsoft and to receive information about solutions. Try the method provided and check. a. Press Windows+R. b. In the search bar type “services.msc” and press Enter. c. Scroll the list and right click on “Windows error reporting service” d. Choose Stop. Status already stop. Method 4: If you are using Microsoft account, then I would suggest you to switch to Local account and then check how the apps work. Follow these steps to switch from Microsoft to Local account. a. Press “Windows key +W”. b. Type “users” without quotes in the search box. c. Then select “Users” from the left panel. d. You will get an option “Switch to a Local account” right below your user account name. e. Select “Switch to a local account” option. f. Enter the required details. g. Then login to the local account then check how the apps work. If you are using Local account, then I would suggest you to switch to Microsoft account and then check how the apps work. Follow these steps to switch from Local account to Microsoft account: a. Press “Windows key +W”. b. Type “users” without quotes in the search box. c. Then select “Users” from the left panel. d. Select “Switch to Microsoft account” right below your user account name. e. Enter the required details. f. Restart the computer and then try to login using new Microsoft account. I ran: microsoftaccounts.diagcab. It said: Authentication information is incomplete. How can I authenticating my Microsoft account if "Store" is not working? Method 5: If that doesn’t work, then I would suggest you to create a new user account and then check how the apps work with new user account. Follow these steps: a. Press “Windows Key + W”. b. Type Users in the search box and select “Users” option from the left panel. c. Select “Add Users” under “Other users” option. d. Add the user profile details. e. Then login to the new user account and then check if this fixes the issue. I can not add users since it's not working same as "Store". It just displayed Windows Metro tile and nothing happened. Some users advice: net user "Jack" xxyyzz /add net localgroup administrators "Jack" /add net users It worked. After sign in with that account, windows seems installing new apps. After finished, only Store and Skype installed but they don't work too (icon with x still exist). I think it doesn't fix the issue Method 6: You may try to clear the cache for the Store and check if it helps: a. Press the Windows key + R. b. Type WSReset.exe and hit enter. c. Reboot the computer and give another shot. It showed: mswindows-store:PurgeCaches The application didn't start I restarted it and did it again, still the same result. Method 7: You may refer the article and try the steps provided to fix the issue. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-IN/windows-8/what-troubleshoot-problems-app I don't have problems with 3rd party app, but with Windows Store which is an app from Microsoft Windows. Method 8: Reset Internet Explorer disclaimer: The Reset Internet Explorer Settings feature might reset security settings or privacy settings that you added to the list of Trusted Sites. The Reset Internet Explorer Settings feature might also reset parental control settings. We recommend that you note these sites before you use the Reset Internet Explorer Settings feature. I did that and nothing happened. Method 9: You may also disable antivirus and check if it helps. When you disable Antivirus: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you shouldn't disable your antivirus software. If you have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you're connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks. I wasn't only disable it, but also uninstalled it. It didn't work also. Method 10: sfc /scannow. All is fine, nothing error. Method 11: Some users advice to type: powershell -ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register $Env:SystemRoot\WinStore\AppxManifest.xml It said: Add-AppxPackage : Deployment failed with HRESULT: 0x80073CF6, Package could not be registered. error 0x8007064A: Cannot register the request because the following error was encountered while initializing the windows.repositoryExtension extension: The configuration data for this product is corrupt. NOTE: For additional information, look for [ActivityId] 4eb697c0-d14e-0002-6c99-b64e4ed1ce01 in the Event Log or use the command line Get-AppxLog -ActivityID 4eb697c0-d14e-0002-6c99-b64e4ed1ce01 At line:1 char:1 + Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register $Env:SystemRoot\WinStore\AppxM ... + ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~ + CategoryInfo : WriteError: (C:\WINDOWS\WinStore\AppxManifest.xm l:String) [Add-AppxPackage], IOException + FullyQualifiedErrorId : DeploymentError,Microsoft.Windows.Appx.PackageMa nager.Commands.AddAppxPackageCommand I think it didn't work for me (some users worked for them). Method 12: Perform a Clean Boot and find out which application/service is causing this issue. A clean boot helps to eliminate software conflicts and to determine what is causing the problem. Perform a clean boot on the computer by following the steps given in the link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135 Follow the steps given in this link to perform a clean boot on the computer. You may please note that performing a clean boot does not fix the actual issue. It just helps us in identifying the root cause of the issue. If the issue does not occur in clean boot, then you may determine which application/service on the computer is causing this issue. This can be done by following the instructions given in the article “How to determine what is causing the problem by performing a clean boot” under the section “More information” from the same given link. Important: After you have finished troubleshooting, refer to the article “How to reset the computer to start as usual after clean boot troubleshooting” for Windows 8, given under the section “More Information” to reset the computer to start as usual from the above link. I already disable all "non" Microsoft service and restart. Still the same. Method 14: Open a Command Prompt with elevated rights. Type in the following: net stop wuauserv This commands should return 'Windows Update Service stopped successfully'. Now again type in: rename %windows%\softwaredistribution softwaredistribution.old or del c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution /q /s This commands forces your system to rename your SoftwareDistribution folder. Windows will automatically create an another one in the next boot. And now we have to restart the Windows Update Service, so type in this: net start wuauserv This command should return ' Windows Update Service started successfully'. Now open your Windows Store and check it again. It didn't work either. Based on the information you provided in your post, it is likely that a corruption in the registry permissions may be causing this problem. This is typically caused by a 3rd party software such as backup/restore, anti-malware or some sort of recovery software that may have overwritten the original permissions in the registry with different values. If you are willing to try, follow these steps and share what you observe: Open registry editor typing regedit.exe from a command line. Browse to the registry key at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\appmodel\repository\packages. Right click on the “packages” key and bring up the “Permissions” tab. Click the “Advanced” button located at the bottom right corner. Check to see the account name that shows up as the “Owner” (this is the first line of text on the “advanced security settings” dialog for the “packages” key). It should say “SYSTEM”. If it is any other account, click on the “Change” button next to it. Type SYSTEM in the “select user” dialog. If “Multiple Names Found” window comes up, select the row for “SYSTEM”. Click OK to the dialogs and close them all. Retry your method 11 and see if it helped.
